Learning Disabilities
A condition in which one or more of an individual's basic psychological processes in understanding or using language are deficient. Some characteristics are hyperactivity, perceptual problems, auditory problems, and memory problems. Causes are thought to be neurological damage or delay in maturation, genetic abnormality, or environmental factors.
Strategies:
Medical treatment including medication
Catered academic instruction that builds particular skills
Interventions aimed at improvement of social skills
Accomodations:
Services (especially during adolescence) are focused on the transition to adulthood. These services also raise awareness that other people may have a hard time seeing and understanding their disability.
